Eeva Peura b. 1982
Born in Orimattila, Finland | Lives and works in Helsinki
Eeva Peura's paintings are an amalgam of found images, imagined memories, and a contrary mix of painting styles. In contemplating her work, one senses its deep connection with the continuum of art history – yet her imagery remains unmistakably her own, charting a singular creative path. Peura is intrigued by how reality and fantasy become jumbled in our minds, and this fusion lends her paintings their fierce intensity. Becoming deeply immersed in the painting process is an inherent part of Peura's method. Her paintings take shape through deep concentration on details such as tree branches, moons, rippling water, and the forms of plants and animals, but intuition and chance play an equally important role in her process. Peura never knows exactly where the process will lead when she begins painting. Time is a critical element; sometimes, it requires a long conversation for the painting to find its final shape. The key is to trust the process and embrace its unfolding stages.
Eeva Peura graduated as a painting major from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2011. She has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Finland, including the Mänttä Art Festival and Turku Art Museum. In 2019, she was the recipient of the William Thuring Foundation Prize. Her work is represented in many of Finland’s most prestigious art collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Turku Art Museum and Vantaa Art Museum Artsi.
