Kim Simonsson b. 1974

Kim Simonsson renews ceramic traditions by combining the language of classical marble sculpture with elements of popular culture, such as fantasy and gaming. His works are highly narrative, populated by figures like golden astronauts and moss-covered children, inviting multiple interpretations within an uncanny world. He uses glaze to reference ceramic history, allowing it to drip freely over the clay surface to create unique, individual pieces. A signature technique is the electrostatic application of nylon fiber, giving sculptures a moss-like texture. Scale has become an increasing focus in his practice, with recent works exploring striking variations in size.

Simonsson graduated with a major in ceramics from the University of Arts and Design in 2000. Today, he is an internationally noted artist found in foreign and Finnish museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, and the EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art. He has created large-scale installations for events such as the Lille3000 Utopia Festival and the 16th Lyon Biennale (2022).
