Marianna Uutinen b. 1961

Biography

Born in Pieksämäki, Finland 1961 | Lives and works in Helsinki and Berlin

Marianna Uutinen's layered acrylic paintings play with kitsch, allurement, and charm. With their colors and plasticity, they allure the viewer to participate in a perceptual game. Her paintings depict this moment and time, being here and now, in today's world. In her new works, the artist's palette moves between bright primary colors, bright aniline, glamorous gold, and mysterious black.

The process of Uutinen's painting has become more intuitive and is getting closer to action painting. What is unusual is her way of building works from creased strips of acrylic paintings. The three-dimensional paintings break into the surrounding space like sculptures. They point to the physicality of the painting where the material and the metaphor mix. From abstract projections, concrete perceptions of modern reality are created.

Uutinen graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and debuted in Helsinki in 1989. In addition to significant private exhibitions in Finland, she has participated in numerous international group exhibitions in Europe and the United States. She took part in the Venice Biennale in 1997 and was awarded the Finland Prize for her distinguished artistic career in 2006. She served as a Professor of Painting at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts from 2004–2008. Uutinen's work is represented in the collections of Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, USA, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark,  Helsinki Art Museum, Kiasma and EMMA, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo.

Galerie Forsblom has been representing Marianna Uutinen since 2011.
