Chantal Joffe: Family
The British artist Chantal Joffe (b. 1969) paints both self-portraits and portraits based on source images from fashion magazines and failed family photographs. Infused with expressive intensity, her portraits are bold and honest in their treatment of the human body. Through her models she studies various manifestations of self-image and self-awareness: some of her sitters pose with pride and self-assurance, others are perceptibly uneasy. Her spontaneous brushstrokes and distorted dimensions have a humorous side, yet the affectionately rendered body language of her models conveys a powerful psychological punch. Her exhibition opening at Galerie Forsblom in autumn 2016 will feature both her giant-scaled oil paintings and a selection of new works in pastels.
Chantal Joffe is a widely acclaimed artist whose works are found in collections including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Modern Artin, London’s Saatchi Gallery and the Tate Modern. In 2006 Latest Art selected her as the most influential female artist of all time.
