Viljami Heinonen paints atmospheres. His subjects vary from interiors, where space is constructed and undone in the same way that the figurative and the abstract overlap within each gesture, to cityscapes in which nature has taken over. What unites these settings is the total absence of human beings, or their presence only as a suggestion. Heinonen creates a sense of layering in his works, built from both physical and temporal dimensions. Decorativeness and an oppressive atmosphere exist side by side, heightening one another.
Viljami Heinonen graduated from Kankaanpää Art School in 2012. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at Serlachius and Laukko Manor, and has participated in group exhibitions at venues including Tampere Art Museum, Pori Art Museum, and Rovaniemi Art Museum. His work is held in collections including HAM Helsinki Art Museum, the Saastamoinen Foundation, Pori Art Museum, the Wihuri Foundation, and the State Art Deposit Collection. He received the William Thuring Prize in 2022, the Art of Basware Award in 2013, and the Marcus Collin Foundation’s Painting Prize in 2025.
